The man who in view of gain thinks of righteousness, who in the view of danger is prepared to give up his life, and who does not forget an old agreement however far back it extends such a man may be reckoned a complete man.
We do not grow absolutely, chronologically. We grow sometimes in one dimension, and not in another, unevenly. We grow partially. We are relative. We are mature in one realm, childish in another. The past, present, and future mingle and pull us backward, or fix in the present. We are made up of layers, cells, constellations.
The deepest human defeat suffered by humans is constitued by the difference between what one was capable of becoming and what one has in fact become. Three passions have governed my life: The longings for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of humankind.
Love brings ecstacy and relieves loneliness. In the union of love i have seen in a mystic miniature the prefiguring vision, of the heavens that saints and poets have imagined.
With equal passion i have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of people. I have wished to know why the stars shine.
Love and knowledge led upwards to the heavens, but always pity brought me back to earth; Cries of pain reverberated in my heart of children in famine, of victims tortured and of old people left helpless. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.
This has been my life; I found it worth living
